Welcome to South Walker Elementary. My name is Karen Nolan. I am the Counselor at South Walker Elementary
Avoiding Homework hassles and fights
1. Establish a homework time. Don't fight about when your child will do their homework. Your child will benefit from a routine. Some children work best right after school. Others do better if they work right before or after dinner. Give your child some choice in the matter-but once a time is selected, that's it. Homework is as routine as brushing his teeth.
2. Insist that homework time happens everyday. This will solve the problem of "I did it at school." If your child really did finish all of their work at school, they can read, work on their math skills, practice spelling words, etc.Your child will spend their time doing something that will help them at school.
3. Ask your child questionswhen they say they don't understand something. For example, instead of explaining the math, ask "How did you slove that last math problem? Could you do that here too?"
4.Don't EVER do their homework for them One way your teacher sees how much your child is actually learning is by checking their homework. If you do the work, she may not know if she needs to reteach something.
