Dear Cedar Hill Parents and Students,

I hope you enjoyed a relaxing and fun-filled Independence Day weekend with your family and friends.  As we move into the full swing of summer programs here at Cedar Hill, I want to introduce myself and make you aware of some happenings at Cedar Hill over the next two months. I am thrilled to be joining the Cedar Hill family. I began my career in education in 1991 teaching seventh- and eighth-grade language arts at Haledon Public School in Passaic County.  I have worked in Bernards Township for the past twenty-three years, mostly at William Annin, at Ridge High School, and most recently at Mount Prospect. Retired principal Joan Tonnarelli and then assistant principal Joe Mollica hired me to teach sixth-grade in 1993. I am a Rutgers College graduate with Master’s degrees from Hunter College CUNY and New Jersey City University. I grew up in Branchburg, attended Somerville High School, and have resided in Jersey City for the past twenty years.

I am very excited about my move to Cedar Hill Elementary School as principal. Along with the outstanding faculty and staff, I am looking forward to working with Mrs. Scully, the parents, PTO, and most of all, the students. The elementary school years are so very important in creating a strong foundation in all academic areas including literacy, mathematics, the arts, and physical education. It is also important for us to balance these academic studies with social and emotional growth. This summer, one of the areas on which our school safety team is focusing is character development. This team of dedicated teachers is meeting during the summer to examine and develop our character education program to better meet the needs of our students. More is to come on this topic as we move closer to the beginning of the new school year.

This summer the office area and front entrance are being renovated to enhance security. A second set of security doors will be added to create a vestibule in the front of the building. The front office room will become the main office area housing the secretaries and the center room will become my office and a conference room. Summer office hours are 7:00 to 3:30 PM, Monday through Thursday. The main office is not open for business on Friday. If you need to drop off or pick up any forms, or conduct any other business, please come Monday through Thursday. Starting Monday, July 11, the main office will be operating from the library. The temporary main entrance will be the side entrance of the building where the car line normally drops off during the school year. Mrs. Rope or Ms. Rue will be monitoring this door Monday through Thursday. Email will be the best way to reach office secretaries and administration during the renovation as access to our direct phone lines will not be as easy while we are temporarily housed in the library.

As we continue through the summer, I will send updates to keep you informed of happenings at Cedar Hill. For now, please enjoy the summer weather, get to the beach, dive into a good book, and have a great time with your children.
