Hello! My name is Ms. Hinton and I am thrilled to be your child’s 5th Grade English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher! 

 

Some facts about me:

• I graduated with my Master’s Degree in Information Technology May, 2025

• I have wide range teaching background in which I’ve served the Paterson, Camden and Newark school communities

• This is my 2nd year teaching here at University Elementary School

Our goals in 5th grade is to: 

 

Understand What You Read: Find the main ideas, details, and themes in stories and nonfiction texts.

 

Use Evidence: Support your answers and ideas with information from the text.

 

Grow Your Vocabulary and Language Skills: Learn new words and use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

 

Write for Different Purposes: Write stories, reports, and opinions with clear ideas and supporting details.

 

Research and Share Information: Gather information from books and websites, and share it clearly.

Our Curriculum is Focus:

• Close reading & text evidence

• Vocabulary & comprehension

• Writing & critical thinking

Supports:

• Differentiated texts

• Leveled readers for multilingual learners

• Small group lessons & assessments

Goal:

✔ Build strong, independent readers and writers

 

We will be using Google Classroom as our digital learning platform. Students have been added to the Google Classroom. We also use Class Dojo to communicate with parents.

 

Behavior Expectations are as follows:

• Be on time.

• Be respectful.

• Focus your attention.

• Complete all assignments.

• Be kind to yourself and others.

• Come to school prepared to learn.

• Wear your school uniform everyday.
