Welcome to English 10

 

2026-2027 English 10 Syllabus

 

Course Objectives: This course is designed to prepare students for the rigorous demands of college-level coursework and life after high school and/or college. The course will assist students in becoming curious, critical, and responsive readers of diverse texts. Students are expected to write effectively for different audiences and purposes; to expand vocabulary; to analyze a variety of texts for themes, purposes, and rhetorical features; and to use the conventions of standard English grammar and usage in writing and speaking.

 

Computers/Chromebooks/Google Classroom

 

Computers/Chromebooks are used for educational purposes only. No games allowed. The use of Chromebooks or other electronic devices is a privilege, and students are expected to adhere to the IPSD policies for internet usage for school-related activities. Students in violation of this policy will not be allowed to use electronic devices. Google Classroom is the learning management system adopted by IPSD. It is a form of blended learning that uses technology as an additional tool to traditional education practices. Students will be able to access information (PowerPoints, study guides, videos, online assignments, discussion boards, quizzes, etc.) as long as they have internet access. 

 

Class Rules and Expectations

 

  • Be respectful, polite, and courteous

  • Be on time 

  • Be prepared (bring paper, pen/pencil, textbook/workbook, and homework) 

  • Respect others (teacher, substitute teacher, classmates, and yourself) and their belongings (don’t write on desks or other school property and/or a classmate’s property) 

  •  Stay in your designated seat throughout the period unless you are permitted to move about the room. Do not line up at the door close to dismissal. 

  •  Keep all handouts, notes, graded papers, etc., in the appropriate section in your binder.

  • If permitted to leave the room, you must sign out and take a hall pass.

  • Use proper language (don’t use vulgar or derogatory language). 

  • Don’t throw any items in the classroom 

  •  Do not do anything that would interfere with all of us having a successful and enjoyable school year

 

Unacceptable behavior can be categorized as disruption, disrespect, and defiance. Unacceptable behavior will NOT be tolerated. 

 

The following are the consequences for unacceptable behavior:

1st offense: Verbal warning 

2nd offense: Parent contact 

3rd offense: Administrator Contact 

Any major offense can be sent directly to an administrator. 

 

Food and Beverages: Food and beverages are NOT allowed in this classroom 

 

Cell Phones/ Electronic Devices- According to the student handbook and state mandate, cell phones are to be turned off and not accessed during the instructional day.



Grading Breakdown Per Cycle

  • HW (10%)- 15 per cycle

  • CW (20%)- 20 per cycle

  • Quizzes (15%)- 4 per cycle

  • Projects (25%)- 2 per cycle

  • Test (30%)- 4 per cycle



Assignments:

 

Every unit will have many different ways to earn points towards your final grade. The assignments will focus on skills in metacognition, reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I strive to create meaningful and authentic learning experiences for students and use the state standards to make sure your ELA experience is well-rounded and comprehensive.  My joy as a teacher is to assign work that challenges your creativity and helps you develop academic, emotional, and social competencies for real-world success. I will work hard to avoid giving busy work, so please work hard to complete each assignment to the best of your ability. 

 

  • Please check Google Classroom regularly to check for missing work or updates. You may email me if you have any questions or concerns

  • You will be handwriting in this class. If any extenuating circumstances prevent you from handwriting, please email me as soon as possible. 

  • Please always check for assignment due dates. Most assignments are due at 11:59 PM. I will check that your work is submitted on time! 

    • SCHOLARS HAVE UP TO  5 DAYS TO SUBMIT ASSIGNMENTS LATE. AFTER THOSE FIVE DAYS HAVE PASSED, I RESERVE THE RIGHT NOT TO ACCEPT THE WORK FOR CREDIT.

    • IF A STUDENT IS ABSENT ON THE DAY AN ASSIGNMENT IS POSTED, THEY WILL RECEIVE A GRACE PERIOD FOR HOW MANY DAYS THEY WERE ABSENT. 

    • IF A SCHOLAR IS ABSENT THE DAY AN ASSIGNMENT IS DUE FOR ANY REASON, THEY MUST COMMUNICATE WITH ME THEIR ABSENCE TO RECEIVE A GRACE PERIOD OF 1 DAY. 

 

  • There is zero tolerance for cheating or plagiarism. You must complete your own work and provide citations if necessary for any ideas or words that are not your own. If you are unsure about how to cite your sources, please email me or see me before turning in work that may be plagiarized. There are serious consequences for cheating/plagiarism, including suspension.
