Welcome to Mrs. Toal's English Class

 

Materials needed for class:

A one-subject notebook JUST for English class OR a one-inch binder

A folder

Pens of pencils

Post-it used for annotating novels during reading

Pack of loose-leaf paper

 

 

English 9 is a yearlong course designed to prepare students with the necessary reading, writing, and organizational skills to succeed in English 10 and the world beyond. Learners will:

 

  • Annotate texts

  • Cite evidence

  • Understand and Analyze Character Development, Theme and Symbolism, Lens and POV

  • Define and Understand Technical, Connotative and Figurative meanings of words

  • Understand Text Structure and Purpose

  • Practice grammar, mechanics, and the writing process in essays that respond to both fiction and nonfictiontexts, analyze literature, and research

Academic Honor Code Violations

High School

First Offense: 

  • A discussion about academic dishonesty with the student;

  • Contact parent and document correspondence;

  • Have the student repeat the assignment;

  • Reducing the student’s grade on the assignment; 

    • Maximum grade 75% on the revised assignment

  • Document honor code violations in the student’s discipline file and the Honor Code Council;

  • Students can lose eligibility for student of the month and academic honors for the year;

  • The teacher will notify the Supervisor and Principal; and,

  • Disciplinary action taken

 

Second Offense:

  • A discussion about the second offense of academic dishonesty with the student;

  • Contact parent and document correspondence;

  • Document honor code violations in the student’s discipline file and the honor code council;

  • Have the student repeat the assignment;

  • Reducing the student’s grade on the assignment; 

    • A maximum grade of 50% on the revised assignment

  • The teacher will notify the Supervisor and Principal;

  • The administration will contact the parent;

  • Students will lose eligibility for student of the month and/or academic honors;

  • Letter in file; and,

  • Disciplinary action taken

 

Third Offense:

  • A discussion about the third offense of academic dishonesty with the student;

  • Contact parent and document correspondence;

  • The student will fail the assignment with a grade of zero 0%

    • If this is a third offense for the same class, the student will fail the marking period

  • Document Honor Code Violations in the student’s discipline file and the honor code council;

  • The teacher will notify the Supervisor and Principal;

  • The administration will contact the parent; 

  • Removal from National Honor Society memberships;

  • Letter in file;

  • Students will lose the privilege of attending the graduation ceremony; and

  • Disciplinary action taken
