What is Social Emotional Learning?

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process of developing social-emotional skills, like coping with feelings, getting along with others, decision making and more.  It is often broken down into five categories: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Responsible Decision Making, Social Awareness and Relationship Skills.

Self-Awareness is the understanding of your emotions, goals, strengths and thoughts, as well as how these things can affect your behavior. Self-Management is the ability to control negative emotions by using positive coping strategies.  Responsible decision making means being able to consider rules, social expectations and personal values to make healthy, smart decisions.  Social Awareness is the ability to understand the perspective and feelings of others.  Lastly, relationship skills help build healthy, meaningful relationships with others.

Social-Emotional Learning is crucial for youth development.  Having these skills enhances a child's ability to succeed in school, in a career and in life!
