Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.’ —Theodore Roosevelt

Hello Parents and Community Supporters,

My name is Ms. Marina Herbert, and I am honored to serve again as your child’s 5th Grade Science and Social Studies teacher. I am excited to begin another year of growth and discovery with our amazing scholars!

This year, we plan to help our students learn and grow academically, socially, and emotionally. You will hear more about these plans at Back-to-School Night on September 18, 2025, from 6:00–8:00 p.m.

I bring with me a wealth of experience, having taught in the Caribbean and for more than ten years across K–12 public and charter schools in Essex County. Teaching is truly my passion, and every day I am energized by the responsibility of nurturing these bright, college-bound scholars. At University Elementary, we believe every child can achieve excellence, and I promise to be fun, compassionate, and flexible while also challenging each scholar to think critically, speak confidently, and write with purpose.

How You Can Support at Home

  • Homework & Reading: Please spend time daily to ensure homework is completed. All students are expected to read one assigned Newsela article nightly. Additionally, make regular visits to the library so your child can select books at their reading level.

  • Projects: Support your child by helping them gather materials and manage time for larger assignments.

  • Supplies: Please check daily that your child has the tools needed—pencils, erasers, sharpeners, notebooks, and colored pencils.

  • Encouragement: Let your child know that you believe in their success. Celebrate their big and small victories.

Staying Connected

I look forward to celebrating the wonderful accomplishments of our scholars throughout the year! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me anytime via email or Class Dojo. Together, we can make this a year of excellence.

With gratitude and excitement,
Ms. Marina Herbert
