My name is Salvaa Hasan and I am a Speech-Language Therapist at Horace Mann Community School.
As a whole, the speech department works hard to help our student's demonstrate a functional way to communicate with others. This may include developing verbal and nonverbal communication skills, language building activities, social interaction with peers, and the utilization of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. Auditory, visual, and tactile models and prompts are utilized throughout sessions. Activities within a speech therapy session take into account each child's individual needs, strengths, and weaknesses. Individualized sessions are structured to help each and every child work towards communicating in the most effective way. Our goal is to develop and trial each comprehensive approach to comunication. We provide the resourves and support for these methods to be generalized into all settings, including the classroom, at home, and during activities of daily living (ADL).
Homework and carry-over activities are provided to children and their families on an individual basis if it is determined by both parent and therapist that additional practice is necessary outside of school. These tasks will be tailored to each student's communication/language/speech abilities and the targets currently being worked on.
Make language a part of every routine or daily activity!
This can be done anywhere: at home, at the doctor's office, in the store, etc.
Modeling the labels for words along with pointing to the items, pairing them with pictures or photos, as well as allowing children to explore/manipulate the real objects helps strengthen understanding and support progress in language development!
