Hello, my name is Jonathon Marks. Currently in my second year at Cecilia Junior High, I currently teach 6th and 8th grade science.

As I told my students on the first day of classes, everyone is capable of passing my class with an A+ as long as they do two simple things: pay attention and stay on top of classwork.  I do not give homework, unless students are unable to finish their assignments in class, in which I case I expect them to finish at home. Most of the time this will apply to assigned reading material or Edpuzzles videos.

The majority of the class is participation-based, meaning I am looking to see that students are trying. This is because science is a way of thinking which is often subject to change. Mistakes on daily assignments are understandable as students wrap their minds around new concepts and I usually do not take off points for this because it is impossible to learn without making mistakes. All that I ask is that students ask questions, participate in discussions and speak up with they do not understand something so that I can find a better way of explaining the lesson to them.

However, it is important to always pay attention for several reasons. First, we will frequently conduct experiments with chemicals or glassware that may be harmful if not handled properly. And, secondly, all quizzes and tests will be graded on correctness. That being said, all the questions that show up on tests will have previously been shown to students on other assignments, I allow students to use their notebooks on these assessments, and I review the day before every test.  Additionally, I give students every opportunity to complete extra credit work and obtain bonus points.

I hope to foster an environment of mutual respect in my classroom. As their teacher, my job is not just to teach them about science but also to get them to think about the world around them in new ways, help them grow as young adults, and prepare them for the next grade.
