Welcome to Lagos' class website. I am the 5th and 6th grade Social Studies teacher.
During this 5th grade year, students will cover topics based on the 5th grade New Jersey Social Studies Standards. 5th graders will experience the wonderful history of Native Americans in North America, Age of Exploration, North American Colonization, Colonial Period, & American Revoultion. Students will be expected to read primary & secondary sources regarding issues surrounding each time period.
This 6th grade year, students will expand their historical/cultural perspective and study many world civilizations. Much like their previous year, students' will follow the New Jersey's 6th grade Social Studies Standards regarding topics/themes/ideas. Some topics will cover are the Origins of Civilization, Mesopotamia, Persians, Egypt, India, China, Greece, Romans, Japan, and the many Native American civilizations of North America.
Aside from students studying learning historical facts, they will develop their understanding of Geography, Government functions, Economics , & historical political thought. In order to develop students Geographical skills, they will be expected to study different physical & politcal maps to identify key points of interest such as borders, recource deposits, rivers, & mountains. Economics will be a reoccuring topic throughout all civilizations covered in both 5th & 6th grade. Students will be expected to participate in Economic simulation projects/assignments. In order to indentify and explain how certain civilizations were able to expand. As for Government functions & historical political thought. Students will study how certain political thoughts developed in certain regions of the world. In turn students will be able to assess how each government type was able to help/hinder their citizens.
