Hello and welcome to Music Class!

My name is Miss Ferenz and I am so excited to meet all of you! We are going to be talking about all different kinds of music as well as the instruments and techniques that they require. We are going to travel through different decades of music from older, famous composers to music that was first performed just last year! I will be reaching out in the future about student interest in choir and band once we have all found our footing in the new school year. I cannot wait to get to know each and every one of you!

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me any time at ferenza@southharrison.k12.nj.us

One thing that I hold very near to my heart are my compositons of the month. There will be one musical, one instrumental, and one current song that I wanted to share with you; they will be posted hear and covered in class. They are posted below.

For the month of October, I found some spookier listening examples!

Musical: The Addams Family (Musical adaptation written in 2009)

Music and book written by: Andrew Lippa, Marshall Brickman, Rick Elice

Direction: Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, choreography by Sergio Trujillo

Interesting things about it:

The story is based off the "Addams Family" comic strip by Charles Addams (Not the TV show or movie)

It originally opened in Chicago before moving to Broadway in April, 2010.

The show's budget was $15 Million which is considered very high for broadway. (Usually between $8-12 million)

Instrumental: Toccata and Fugue in D Minor

   written by: Johann Sebastian Bach

Interesting things about it:

This song is performed with an organ

   We are not sure when this was composed;

it can be anywhere between 1705-1750.

The reason that this piece survived past the 1800s was because of Johannes Ringk's first publication of the piece in 1833.

Popular music: The Monster Mash

Written by: Bobby Pickett, Lenny Capizzi, Gary S. Paxton

Interesting things about it:

   Originally written in 1962!

Was banned in the United Kingdom for 11 years by the BBC for being "Too morbid".

There is a movie musical called "Monster Mash" from 1995 that is based off of the song.
