Special Services at Stonybrook

For those parents whose students continue to be eligible for special education and related services coming from the Kiel School:

  • Case managers from Kiel will meet with their counterparts at Stonybrook (SB) to share detailed information concerning your student’s strengths, areas of need, and all pertinent information in the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP)
  • Your case manager, if new to you at SB, will contact you at the very beginning of the school year to begin a relationship that will endure throughout the three years of middle school
  • SB teachers who will be working with your child will read and become familiar with your student’s IEP by no later than two weeks into the first marking period
  • For those students receiving related services (counseling, speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy), these will continue to be provided at SB

For Newly Classified Student Entering SB:

  • Your case manager will contact you at the very beginning of the school year to continue a relationship that will endure throughout the three years middle school
  • SB  teachers  who will be working with your child will read and become familiar with your student’s IEP by no later than two weeks into the first marking period
  • Related services such as speech, occupational therapy, speech and counseling, if written in your child’s IEP, will be provided at SB

For those parents whose students are not currently eligible for special education and related services and who begin experiencing difficulties:

  • SB has an Intervention and Referral Services (I& RS) Committee whose mission is to provide additional supports to students experiencing academic difficulties.  This committee draws on the expertise from members of the Child Study Team to help design interventions to support students
  • Should the I & RS process not yield satisfactory results, students may be referred for more intensive support services
