Welcome to another exciting school year! As your child's ESL teacher, my goal is for students to produce the English language independently according to their grade level. English as a Second Language is an instructional program for students whose dominant language is not English. The purpose of the program is to increase the English language proficiency level of the eligible student so he/she can achieve academic success in the classroom. The language components include listening, speaking, reading and, writing.
For listening, students will listen to audiobooks in English which coordinate with the targeted lesson being taught,as well as myself reading different storybooks emphasizing correct pronounciation.
For speaking, students will be introduced to "speech shadowing" where the teacher reads or says a phrase and students repeat it. This encourages correct pronounciation,language fluency, and proper word usage and grammar. Students will be encouraged to speak to one another while completing verbal/oral exercises.
For reading, students will be reading or read to different genres of books/stories, building vocabulary, understanding word meanings, learning sequence of events, important details, cause and effect, comprehension, and more.
For writing, students will be exposed to different writing styles to improve their brainstorming skills, spelling, grammar, capitalization, punctuation and sentence structure.
