To help parents realize the importance of reading to their children, I always bring this fact to their attention. It is from the National Center for Education (NCES), and it states that children who are read to at home have much higher academic success rates than children who are not read to nearly as much. Practice makes perfect; and if children are read to 3-4 times a week, they will be that much more likely to recognize letters of the alphabet (26% will recognize all the letters of the alphabet if read to at home, whereas only 14% of children will recognize all of the letters if not read to at home). Fluency with counting numbers, writing names, and role playing with reading will also be positively affected when books are abundant at home. So please, whenever there is free time, pick up a book at home. Read, discuss, and explore the text with your children!
