"Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift." – Kate DiCamillo

Hello, and welcome to the Emma Havens Young Elementary School Media Center!

The Media Center is dedicated to promoting life-long readers, learners, and future leaders. My name is Mrs. Bennett and I will be your teacher for your library special during the year!  If you have any questions or need to contact me at any time, I can best be reached by e-mail at [email protected].

What is the EHY Check- Out Policy?

Every child is able to select one book to take home and enjoy. Please encourage your child to enjoy and take care of our library materials and return them for more. Also, please enjoy the library books WITH your child! Reading aloud to kids strengthens children's social, emotional, and character development.

What if a Student Forgets to Return a Book?

Life is busy! Sometimes a student may forget to bring their book to school. Please give them a special place at home to keep their library books and help them remember when their books are due. While there are no fines charged for a forgotten book, students may not borrow a new book until the previous book has been returned.

This, however, is marked in as missing for the week and thus affects the grading process for their Media Center grade.  Often, a reminder will be sent home.

What if my Student Wants to Renew a Book?

Students must bring the checked out book that they have in their possession to the media center on their Library Special day.  It can be scanned, renewed, and returned to them at that time.  Students can renew their chosen checked out book until they have completed it, or up to 5 times.  This would ensure that the account connected to each student is up to date and a charge would not be issued to their account for the book.

What If A Book Is Damaged?

Accidents happen and books do get worn out. Do not try to fix any book. We use special materials to repair damaged books. Please put a note in the book when it is returned and we will take care of it.

What Happens If a Book Gets Lost?

If a book is lost or severely damaged the family is asked to pay the replacement cost of that book. A notice will be sent home with the student listing their account information and the replacement charge for the book.

Our Google Classroom contains some instructional materials and media resources.   You may join our class by asking your student for the class code!

I’m looking forward to getting to know you this year and to reading our way through the year!
