AR (Accelerated Reader)

Accelerated Reader is a reading suppliment that we use at Heights Elementary to enhance students reading skills. Students will not recieve a letter grade for AR but will need to meet their AR points and level goals to ensure they receive an S (satisfactory) for effort in Language Arts on their report cards.

Book Color: AR books are color coded based on reading level. Students will read on a book color (or level) that they will be successful on. This means that they are able to read and comprehenend the text but they are being challenged. Students will want to "go up a color" but will only do so if they are ready.  (Example: 2.4 equates to second grade 4th month of school)

Book level Goal: Students will be given a Quarterly AR book level goal. These goals will be based on that student's STAR test data results. Students will have the whole quarter to reach their book level goal to ensure they are receiving an S (satisfactory) for effort on their report card. Teacher will talk to each student daily about their progress and help monitor AR tests, levels, and library visits. **Levels can go up or down depending on student progress. The teacher will make the decision that she feels will make the student feel confident and result in student success.**

Point Goal: Students will be given a Quarterly AR points goal. These goals will be based on that student's STAR test data results. This is averaged in with the amount of time your child spends on reading daily. Your child should be reading about 20-25 minutes on their own or to you.  After each practice quiz, your child will accumulate points, you can see how many points each book is worth on the inside of the book (if borrowed from our school library). Students will have the whole quarter to reach their points goal to ensure they are receiving an S (satisfactory) for effort on their report card. Teacher will talk to each student daily about their progress and help monitor AR tests, levels, and library visits.
