We will be working through the Amplify curriculum.  The units are:

 

  • UNIT 1: 6A: Dahl & Narrative-Students begin with narrative writing to quickly boost their writing production, to learn the foundational skill of Focus, and to become comfortable with key classroom habits and routines they will use all year. Then, students apply their new observational focus to some lively readings from Roald Dahl’s memoir, Boy: Tales of Childhood, and learn how to work closely with textual evidence. 

  • UNIT 2: 6B: Mysteries & Investigation- In Mysteries & Investigations, students “read like an investigator” and embark on a multi-genre study into the mesmerizing world of scientific and investigative sleuthing. 

  • UNIT 3: 6D: The Greeks- The stories of world mythologies have a timeless quality. The Greek myths in this unit explore questions and themes that help us understand the world around us and our role in it. Drawing on the routines and skills established in previous units, these lessons ask students to move from considering the state of a single person—themselves or a character—to contemplating broader questions concerning the role people play in the world and the various communities they inhabit within it. 

  • UNIT 5: 6E: Summer of the Mariposas- In sixth grade, students are often entering a time when ideas about who they are and how they fit in the world are front of mind. Summer of the Mariposas by Guadalupe Garcia McCall is a novel that follows the journey of the Garza sisters into Mexico and back, but it also navigates the personal journey that the girls take to find themselves, one another, and their family. This journey is part of what makes this novel such a good fit for students in the middle grades.
