Parents- please make sure that your child is reading 20-30 minutes every night. This will help with reading fluency, word recognition, and vocabulary skills. If possible, have them read out loud so that they can hear themselves read which also helps with fluency.

6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Reading

 

Student will continue to work on their argument (8th) or compare and contrast (6th and 7th) papers. I will be modeling how to fill in a graphic organizer and working with the students individually to compose their papers througout the week. The final copy of the paper will be due on Monday, 12/10. This includes extended time as the original due date was 12/7. The week of 12/10 is a busy week. On Monday and Tuesday students will be meeting with me indivdually to discuss their progress in reading so far and discuss their Reading Inventory scores (Lexile) in preparation for their mid-year Reading Inventory which will be Wednesday (12/12). Additionally, students will be completing a Phonics Inventory on Friday (12/14) of this week. Computer software and independent reading will be incorportated throughout this week.

8th Grade Reading

 

Students will prepare for and begin to compose their argumentative essays over whether or not Fortnite is an addiction or an amusement. Students will work daily to complete parts of the writing process and fill in graphic organizers to help them with their writing. They will continue to work on this after the Thanksgiving break.  There is a quiz over Argumentative Writing (organization notes and vocabulary words) on Tuesday, November 13th. 

 

 

7th and 6th Grade Reading

 

Students will prepare for and begin to compose their informational writing essay (compare and contrast type) over Pokemon Go (7th grade) or the differences between Earthquakes and Volcanoes (6th). Students will work daily to complete parts of the writing process and fill in graphic organizers to help them with their writing. They will continue to work on this after the Thanksgiving break. There will be a quiz over informational writing on November 13th.

8th Grade Reading

 

Last week students started the embedded writing element for Workshop 7, Argumentative Writing. Over the next couple of weeks, students will complete activities to understand the mechanics of Argumentative Writing, such a vocabulary and analyzing different argumentative essays. Additionally, the students will read independently and complete tasks in the Read 180 and System 44 software. Eventually, students will complete an argument essay over a particular topic. 

 

 

7th and 6th Grade Reading

8th Grade Reading

 

Students will continue to learn about invasive species. Students will plan, organize, and compose a written response to last week's article. They will read another article entitled "America's Least Wanted" which discusses additional invasive species in America. Throughout the reading students will be required to work on multiple reading comprehension skills such as identifying the main idea, synthesizing what they have read, and identifying cause and effect relationships. They will also read a flowchart that shows how invasive species affect the areas where they are introduced.  Vocabulary, computer software, and independent reading will also be incorportated this week as well. 

 

7th Grade Reading

 

Students will continue to learn about child labor.  Students will plan, organize, and compose a written response to last week's article. They will read another article entitled "Child Labor Around the World" which dicusses who child labor is an international problem. During the reading, students will work on reading comprehension skills such as identifying the main idea, summarizing the passage, and synthesizing. They will also work on how to read a timeline and answer questions based off of the timeline. Vocabulary, computer software, and independent reading will be incorportated this week as well. 

 

 

6th Grade Reading

 

Students will continue to learn about immigration. They will read an article that discusses how difficult it is for immigrants to fit in at school. During this reading, students will work on reading comprehension skills such as finding the main idea and details, analyzing what they have read, and summarizing the article. They will plan, organize, and compose a written response to that article.  Vocabulary, computer software, and independent reading will also be incorportated this week as well.

Students will continue to learn about invasive species. They will read an article about the brown tree snake on the island of Guam. Throughout the reading, students will be required to work on multiple reading comprehension skills such as identifying the main idea, synthesizing, and identifying cause and effect relationships. Vocabulary, computer software, and independent reading will also be incorportated this week as well. 

 

 

7th Grade Reading

 

Students will continue to learn about child labor. They will read an article that explores the topic of  children working  in fields for a living in order to help support their families. During this reading, students will work on reading comprehension skills such as identifying the main idea, summarizing the passage, and synthesizing. Vocabulary, computer software, and independent reading will be incorportated this week as well. 

 

 

6th Grade Reading

 

Students will continue to learn about immigration. They will read an article that discusses how important receiving an edcuation is for many immigrants. During this reading, students will work on reading comprehension skills such as finding the main idea and details, analyzing what they have read, and summarizing the article. 8th Grade Reading-

 

Students will finish up the introduction to Workshop 7 which is about Invader Species. They will then read an article about the Snakehead fish and how it is an invader species. They will complete a graphic organizer which focuses on identifying cause and effect after reading the passage. Additionally, they will answer comprehension and summarizing questions as they read the passage. The students will work in groups to complete a series of cause and effect stations in which they will complete different activities that involve identifying causes and effects in a reading passage. Vocabulary, computer software, and independent reading will be incorporated this week as well. 

 

7th Grade Reading-

 

Students will finish up their introduction activity to Workshop 4 which is about Child Labor. They will read the first article on Child Labor about children who work in a garbage facility. They will answer comprehension and summarizing questions as they read the passage. They will also be required to summarize the article using a graphic organizer. Students will also participate in station rotations that summarizing reading activities. They will work in groups for this activity and share with the class their findings. Vocabulary, computer software, and independent reading will be incorporated this week as well. 

 

6th Grade Reading- 

 

Students will complete a powerpoint introduction to System 44 in the computer lab. They will complete a trial run/practice rotating stations in the class for Read 180/System 44. They will also select their books from the Read 180 or System 44 class library. Students will also begin the introduction to Workshop 1 which is about New Americans (Immigration). Vocabulary, computer software, and indpendent reading will be incorporated this week as well.

 My name is Jessica Bowden and this is my third year teaching at Palmer, but I have been teaching for 9 years total. I am a product of the Cobb County School system and graduated from Kennesaw State University. I will be teaching Reading to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders this school year.
