Basic Skills Instruction (BSI) Overview:
The BSI program is designed to help students in grades 1-6 who are having academic difficulty in class. Students are identified because they are consistently below grade level and struggling with skills that should have been mastered prior to entering their current grade level. The BSI program is not designed for students who are capable but underachieving. The BSI teacher works with students according to their needs.
Entering the Program:
Students in grades 1-6 are identified for BSI services by:
Low grades or grades that reflect teacher modification
Literacy and Math assessments that are below grade level
Low standardized testing or NJSLA scores
Students who are new to the district may not be recommended until they have been in the district 30 calendar days. After 30 days, they may be recommended regardless of the time in the school year. Just because a student had BSI in a previous school does not automatically ensure eligibility for services in our school. A letter will be sent to all identified BSI students in September that they are eligible for BSI services during that school year.
Exiting the Program:
All students will exit the BSI program at the end of the school year. For students to continue in BSI the following year they must be recommended again at the end of the school year, as well as meet district established guidelines for BSI.
