Welcome to English I!!

 

Syllabus

 

 Course Description: English I consists of a genre/thematic curriculum and studies that include reading, writing, speaking, listening, and improving vocabulary skills. In addition, there will be an emphasis on literary analysis and the writing process based upon the reading selections.

 

This course will examine both fictional and nonfictional texts and will consist of four quarters based on the text.  Stories will include: selected essays and articles, short stories, a Shakespearean tragedy, and poetry.  Selections will focus on current events and issues from contemporary society.

 

Each marking period will include the following components:

  • Q1: Fiction/Non-Fiction
  • Q2: The Novel
  • Q3: Epic Poetry
  • Q4: Romeo and Juliet

 

Assessments will include summative writing and quizzes/unit tests completed throughout the semester. Summative writing assessments will include literary analysis and expository writing. With the exception of the Mid-Term and Final, summative writing assessments will combine the grade for the completed assignment and revisions.

 

Course Materials: Glencoe Literature: The Readers Choice (Course 4), and other selected novels.

 

Supplies: A folder or binder is suggested for this class. Students are at the very least required to have:

  • Daily Journals will be provided.
  • Folder
  • Pencils, black/dark blue pens
  • Suggestions: Highlighters/Flash drive

Each student will be provided with a classroom folder for graded papers and additional notes.

 

Classroom Rules: The Four P’s

 

  1. Prompt Arrival: Be on time and ready to learn (Lateness will not be tolerated!)
    1. Five X Late (Referral)
  2. Polite Behavior: Be appropriate and ensure the learning environment is enjoyable and free of disruptions. Name-calling, put-downs, harassment, and bullying are NOT permitted. Remain respectful and mature.
  3. Preparedness: Bring a pen/pencil, notebook, and folder to every class.
  4. Paying Attention: remaining attentive, asking questions and participation are key ingredients for learning. Electronic devices are NOT permitted and are considered a distraction.

 

Academic Integrity: Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will result in a zero on an assignment. It will also be reported to guidance and your parents.  This includes plagiarism, fabrication, cheating, and copying.
