Mr. John Barry Vidrine
E.L.A. & Social Studies
8th Grade
Welcome to Chataignier Elementary 8th Grade E.L.A. and Social Studies!!!
ABOUT ME
My name is J. Barry Vidrine and I am a resident of Ville Platte. I recieved a B.A.S from LSU and a M.Ed. from Louisiana College. I am a veteran of the United States military and I am so grateful for the opportunity to teach ELA and Social Studies at Chataignier Elementary. I have a strong passion for History and Literature as well as grammar and it is my hope to instill that passion in my students. Working together, I know that each student will be instilled with a quality education that will benefit him/her for their entire life.
MY CLASS
I believe that learning can be fun and I truly want the classroom experience to be an enjoyable one for all. While the core of my classes is E.L.A. and Social Studies, the content will extend beyond the traditional. When appropriate, students will be exposed to such cross-curricular elements as history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, etc. Diversity in the classroom makes for greater understanding in all aspects of their education.
MY EXPECTATIONS
My expectations for each student during the course of this school year are high but attainable. It is my goal to prepare each student for the rigors of high school and, eventually, college. With each grade level comes greater responsibility and, therefore, I expect each student to be accountable for their own work. What this means is that I expect my students to take an active interest in his or her education. I want my students to take pride in their achievements. I want my students to succeed. I want my students to thrive. I want my students to put forth their best efforts so that when they graduate they will know that their success was not given to them but, rather, it was earned!
GRADING
My system of grading is fairly standard with the overall grade as a combination of tests, quizzes, and daily assignments. The tests are meant to assess your child’s understanding of material (usually reading comprehension); quizzes gauge the student’s attention to the lessons; and daily assignments are designed to encourage effort as much as understanding. Effort is always rewarded in my classroom. It is my belief that just as each child is individually different, so are their styles of learning. I do not simply “teach” subject matter to my students, I try to get to know them on a personal lever and tailor an education that emphasizes their strengths and improves their weaknesses. It is my hope that as the school year progresses students will become more comfortable with both the classroom and my expectations. It is important to understand that while report cards are an indicator of student scholastic progress through the course of the school year, it is no way a complete reflection of each student as a person. A student’s efforts in the classroom and the growth they show from day to day is not always assessed by a grade.
