JOBS FOR AMERICA’S GRADUATES COURSE

JAG-LA’s mission is to identify students who face barriers to education and to guide each one on to a successful path toward continued education, a meaningful career and a productive adulthood. The program works with Louisiana students as early as 6th grade all the way through 12th grade and provides services for our out-of-school youth where the traditional school setting was not or conductive.  The core program provides opportunities for students challenged with life and learning hurdles, including academic, social, behavioral and economic.

JAG-LA delivers a unique set of services for students with major obstacles to help them earn a high school diploma. The program also supports students’ pursuing a Career Diploma through early experiences in foundational career skills and career awareness. There are 37 core competencies taught within 6 clusters.  The clusters are listed below:

  1. Career Development Competencies
  2. Job Attainment Competencies
  3. Job Survival Competencies
  4. Basic Competencies
  5. Leadership and Self-Development Competencies
  6. Personal Skills Competencies

CLASS REQUIREMENTS

Students will be required to complete and pass writing assignments, research projects, tests/exams, and homework. Students will also be required to research information outside of class, participate meaningfully and respectfully in classroom discussions, maintain good attendance, have a respectful and positive attitude, and come to class ready to learn!

ENTERING THE CLASSROOM

I expect you to follow these procedures:

  1. Enter the classroom quietly without running or pushing.
  2. Sit in your assigned seat given.
  3. Do not get out of your seat for any reason.
  4. Copy your “Do-Now” assignment in the “Do Now” section of your binder.
  5. Work quietly and by yourself unless you are given permission to work with a partner/group by the teacher.
  6. Wait for further instructions from the teacher.

TARDY TO CLASS

If a student arrives to class late, they should immediately go to the office to get a tardy prior to reporting to class.  If a student decides not to get a tardy, they will not be allowed in class and they will receive a “0” for that day and will not be able to make-up any work missed. The student may also be given a detention (ISS/Saturday Detention) by his/her administrator.

DRESS CODE

Dress code will strictly be enforced at all times.  Failure to abide by the dress code policy will result in a referral.

  1. Student ID cards are to be worn at all times.
  2. Pants must be worn on your waist.

GRADED ASSIGNMENTS

All assignments will be graded; therefore, they need to be taken seriously.  Formal assignments (quizzes, tests, projects, etc.) are worth 70% of your grade.  Informal assignments (do-nows, homework, classwork, etc.) are worth 30% of your grade. You will be given a weekly do-now answer sheet on Mondays.  This assignment should be completed within the first 10 minutes of class daily.  I will pick up the answer sheet on Fridays to be graded. It is your responsibility to complete any do-now that you have missed due to being absent.  If you choose not to complete it, you will receive an “0.”

****** POP QUIZZES WILL BE GIVEN******

PLAGIARISM, CHEATING, AND ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Plagiarism is the practice of copying words, sentences, images, or ideas for use in written or oral assessments without giving proper credit to the source. Cheating is defined as the giving or receiving of illegal help on anything that has been determined by the teacher to be an individual effort. Both are considered serious offenses and will significantly affect your course grade. Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct booklet for additional information.

ABSENCES/MAKE-UP POLICY

For excused absences of five or more consecutive days, the student must be given the opportunity to complete make-up work within ten (10) school days after returning to school.  Extension of time will be granted by a school administrator and the teacher in cases if extenuating circumstances due to extended illness.

The student is held responsible for initiating and completing all make-up work.  The student must notify the teacher prior to the day they would like to make-up the work and stay after school to do so.  Students are NOT able to make-up work during class time unless they have all assignments for that day.  If the work is not made up, the incomplete grade will become an “F.”  If a student receives an “I” (incomplete) for a grading period, that “I” will become an “F” if the work is not made up by the end of the following grading period.

CONSEQUENCES

Everything we do in life has consequences. If you choose to run a red light, you must accept the consequences that come with it (traffic ticket, taking someone’s life, crashing your car, etc.). Therefore, this is what will happen if you choose to violate any one of the classroom rules.

1st time:  Verbal Warning w/ documentation

2nd time: Teacher/Student Conference

3rd time:  Contact Parent/Guardian

4th time:  Referral

MARKING PERIOD PARTICIPATION POINTS

Each marking period students will be given 100 participation points.  Students can lose those points for doing the following:

  1. Sleeping in class
  2. Using profanity
  3. Being off task/not completing assignments
  4. Not in the proper dress code
  5. Getting out of seat w/o permission

REWARDS

I do believe in recognizing students for doing a good job or having good behavior.  Possible rewards are: bonus points on an assignment, free homework pass, picking something out of the grab bag, etc.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES

The use of electronic devices is prohibited in this classroom unless specify by the teacher.  However, there are some days when we will use electronic devices in order to complete an assignment.   If electronic devices are not used in class, they are to be stored away in your school bag. They should not be placed in your pocket.

RESTROOM POLICY

Each student will be given 5 restroom passes per semester.  The pass must be kept in the student’s ID case along with their ID.  Prior to going to the restroom, you must present your pass so that the teacher can sign off on it.  If for some reason, students misplaced their restroom pass for that marking period they will have to wait for the next marking period to receive another pass.  Students who do not use their passes will be allowed to exchange them for points at the end of each marking period.
