Lessons are offered on the following instruments for 4th and 5th grade students:
Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Percussion, Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass.
Lessons will follow a two week pattern. One week, Mr. Hill will post an instructional video in google classroom for students to watch on their own time, play along with, and practice. Students are encouraged to watch the video as many times as they want to, to feel comfortable with learning to play, and establish a regular practice routine at home. 10 to 15 minutes, at least 5 days a week, is the recommended practice time. For the week following Mr. Hill's post, students will be required to upload a video recorded response to Seesaw, playing something that was assigned for practice in Mr. Hill's lesson. That way, Mr. Hill can see their playing, and offer feedback and suggestions for how to improve. The digital learning format is new to all of us, so there may be changes to the structure as the year progresses. Learning an instrument remotely will present unique challenges that will require patience, and support from home, but will also lead to increased independence and responsibility in students.
Fourth and Fifth Grade students participating in instrumental music will receive a grade each marking period. Grades are calculated on a weekly basis for each lesson. The grades will be based on: turning in digital assignments, showing improvement on assigned playing, as well as tone quality, proper technique, correct tempo, note reading and rhythmic accuracy. Students will also fill out a weekly practice survey to reflect on their own playing, and help establish goals for practice. All grades are based on a 10 point system.
