Lesson

Monday

  • § Textbook, Home:  We will review the passage that tells the student what they will learn, how they will learn, and the purpose of their learning.  Students always want to know why they have to learn something and they deserve to know to be a better learner.
  • § Unit 1 cover page:  I will simply show students what can be found on that page.
  • § Unit 1, Topic 1, Textbook, Pages 1-3:  Discuss what we are covering in this Topic, what our goal is for studying this topic, and key questions to explore.  I will also cover strategies that students can use to help them during the learning process and why these strategies are important on page 3.
  • § Unit 1, Topic 1, Textbook, Page 4:  Why We Need to Study Social Studies.  Students will watch the video for a better understanding of why we learn social studies.

Tuesday

  • § Unit 1, Topic 1, Textbook: Page 5:  The Last Ice Age.  Students will read the paragraph and summarize what they have read (with my guidance on summarizing).  My objective here is to have the students reading and writing as much as possible.  This is the backbone of their education.  After students complete this task, I will ask students to hold a class discussion on what their understanding is as I guide their conversation.
  • § Unit 1, Topic 1, Textbook: Page 6:  Timeline of World Events.  I will explain timelines and how they are used, pointing out why this timeline starts out at the year 15,000 BCE. Students will review the timeline and then answer questions regarding their understanding of the timeline.
  • § Unit 1, Topic 1, Textbook: Page 7:  Vocabulary words.  When students have their laptops, they will define their vocabulary words in their notebooks using Quizlet.  This is a study strategy for students to learn their vocabulary.  Their vocabulary words are words they will be using in this Unit.  Students will record their vocabulary words and definitions in their paper notebooks.

Wednesday

  • § Unit 1, Topic 1, Textbook: Page 8:  Lesson Activity: Defining Civilization.  Students will learn the meaning of “Civilization.”  We will explore and discuss 2 different meanings of civilization.
    • Students will watch a Discovery Education and YouTube video on civilization to help them further understand and differentiate their learning and to show students how they should use more than one source to get more accurate information.
    • We will discuss what the two meanings of civilization mean, how are they alike and how they are different.  I will inform students of why an understanding of civilization is important in their learning of Ancient History.

Thursday

  • § Unit 1, Topic 1, Textbook: Page 9:  Now that students have completed page 8 of the textbook, they will work on Characteristics of Civilization form.  Students will receive a grade for their work.
  • § Unit 1, Topic 1, Textbook: Page 10:  Geographical Factors that Affect the Development of Civilizations.  Students will watch videos and read 2 small passages.  Once they have completed this, they will be directed to their notebook to complete the task.  Notebooks will also be graded.  Some tasks may be given a check for completion that will lead to a participation grade while others receive their own grade.
    • Students will review geographic terms and a video that informs them of what some of these things look like.
