August 2019

Dear 5th Grader,

My name is Mr. Keri.  I graduated from Rutgers University, and worked in Piscataway and East Brunswick schools before beginning to teach at Liberty Corner School in 2014.  I cannot believe this will be my sixth year at LCS! This will be my first year teaching fifth grade at Liberty Corner after teaching 3rd grade during my first 5 years.  I have been working hard to prepare a fun and educational year for you. I am so lucky and excited to teach some of you again and meet others! I cannot wait to get started as you begin your final year in LCS!  You will see some new faces and some familiar faces as well. As a team, he fifth grade will be platooning or switching classes more this year. It will be so exciting!

I hope you have enjoyed your summer as much as I have! My highlight was going to Ireland!  We saw many great things. I love being able to explore new parts of the world! Mrs. Keri and I also spent time with our puppy, Teddy, as we relaxed and worked on our home in Somerville.  We are also very excited because we are expecting our first baby in December! I’m sure you will hear all about it!

We will be learning so much this year.  In addition to preparing you for middle school, we will be able to have fun while we develop our character.  We will be using Reading and Writing Workshop to help us be the best readers and writers we can be. We will be reading a variety of genres as we practice different strategies to improve our reading.  By the end of the school year, you will have an amazing Writer’s Notebook and Google Drive filled with responses to texts, poetry, and stories. In math, we will continue to build your ability to multiply and divide.  We will also learn about fun new applications such as exponents, doing operations with decimals and fractions, and how to calculate volume. You will be ready to be middle school mathematicians!

I have more to tell you, but that can wait until September. I’m sure that you have great stories to tell about yourself. So here’s your first homework assignment…yes, even before school starts! Please write me a letter about yourself. It can include what you did this summer, your favorite books, or even foods you hate; whatever you would like to tell me about yourself. Bring in your letter for the first day of school, not to Open House. This will help me and the other teachers you will have this year get to know you better.

I hope to see you at our Open House on Wednesday, September 4th anytime from 2:00 - 3:00 PM.  Simply come on by to room 204 (Yes! This is a change!)! Our first day is Thursday, September 5th.  School begins promptly at 8:45 AM, and I recommend you bring a healthy snack! Please make sure you tell your parents that the first day is a FULL DAY OF SCHOOL!

Enjoy the rest of your summer.  I can’t wait to meet you!

Mr. Keri

Platooning

Families,

The Fifth Grade Team is looking forward to working with your child this year with a Platooning Model approach to teaching. Last year, the district used a few models for the fifth grade to “get their feet wet” and see which approach would work best for the district. This year, your child will have the opportunity to work with three different teachers. Students will benefit from different teaching styles, physical movement between classrooms, and the organization skills gained as they prepare to move on to William Annin Middle School.

So how will all this work? Simple. Below you will see a color-coded chart with a teacher’s name at the top. That is the homeroom teacher. Your child will start and end their day with their homeroom teacher. Throughout the day, the children in that homeroom will move together as a class to other teachers for specific subjects. During Specials, the children will have the opportunity to have class with other children who may not be in their homeroom class. The Special Schedule will be handed out on the first day of school.

The Fifth Grade Team can’t wait to meet you for our Back to School Night Presentation that will be shown in the gymnasium. Continue to have a wonderful summer.

Warm Regards,

Sara Mastroianni (Fifth Grade Team Leader)
