August 2020

Dear 5th Grader,

My name is Mr. Keri.  I am a graduate of Rutgers University, and worked in Piscataway and East Brunswick schools prior to beginning at Liberty Corner School in 2014.  I cannot believe this will be my seventh year at LCS!  This will be my second year teaching fifth grade after teaching 3rd grade during my first 5 years.  I have been working hard to prepare a fun and educational year for you.  I am so lucky and excited to teach some of you again and meet others!  I cannot wait to get started as you begin your final year at LCS!  You will see some new faces and some familiar ones as well.  Even though our class will be a mix of virtual and in-person, we will work on building connections and a great learning experience.

I hope you have enjoyed your summer as much as I have! My highlight was watching our son, CJ grow up!  He loved splashing in the pool which made us smile every time he got a chance to go in.  I also celebrated the completion of my college program where I learned how to be a principal.  Even though I am not principal yet, I learned a lot that will help me also be a better teacher for you.

We will be learning so much this year.  In addition to preparing you for middle school, we will have fun while we develop our character.  We will be using Reading and Writing Workshop to help us be the best readers and writers we can be.  We will be reading a variety of genres as we practice different strategies to improve our reading.  By the end of the school year, you will have writing pieces that include responses to texts, poetry, and stories.  In math, we will continue to build your ability to multiply and divide.  We will also learn about fun new applications such as exponents, doing operations with decimals and fractions, and how to calculate volume.  You will be ready to be middle school mathematicians!

I have more to tell you, but that can wait until September. I’m sure that you have great stories to tell about yourself. I would love to hear from you!  I invite you to write me a letter about yourself. It can include what you did this summer, your favorite books, or even foods you hate; whatever you would like to tell me about yourself. You can type or write your letter and email it to me.  My email address is  This is not mandatory, but I would love to hear from you!

Our first day is Wednesday, September 3rd.  The first month will be online.  School begins promptly at 8:45 AM.  When the day comes closer, I will send you and your parents the information for our first meeting including the Zoom Link and what you have to bring.  I can tell you that one of things will be a big smile!

Enjoy the rest of your summer.  I can’t wait to see you!

Mr. Keri
