Dear parents and guardians:
Welcome back to school!
Your child will be attending my ESL (English as a Second Language) class daily. He /She will be pulled from his/her language arts for a total of 45 minutes. Kindergarteners are pulled for 30 minutes daily. During that time, we will focus on developing skills in: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
We work from the Avenues series. Each textbook and practice book is divided by grade level. Activities focus on your child’s particular level of language development. We work on developing vocabulary through the Oxford Picture Dictionary for Kids and the Oxford Dictionary for the Content Areas. In grades 1-5, we develop grammatical concepts and patterns through the English At Your Command text and workbook. We play board and computer games as well (such as: Brainpop ESL and Raz Kids), which further develop language skills.
In kindergarten, we focus on letter and initial sound recognition, writing of letters and numbers, and developing social and conversational skills. We enjoy learning nursery rhymes, songs, and creating language together.
I will also be working closely with your child’s teachers to support their learning in the regular classroom. My job is to be available to your child on an emotional as well as an academic level.
I encourage you to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have throughout the school year at: firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at: 609-737-4006 (ext. 1280). I am looking forward to a productive and exciting year with your child(ren).
Ms. Susan Horowitz
