"Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hello! I am very excited to be working with your children this year. During the first few weeks of the school year, our school district's EXCEL Department works diligently to analyze data and identify students for potential EXCEL and Enrichment groups using multiple measures. We then work with classroom teachers and other service providers, such as our Speech and/or Physical Therapists, Basic Skills Instructors, Band Instructors, etc. to create a schedule that works best for everyone involved. Parents and/or guardians of students who will participate in these groups are notified once rosters and schedules are finalized. We begin servicing fourth and fifth-grade students first, usually by mid to late September. Then we begin to service third-grade students, followed by second-grade students towards the end of October. (First-grade students normally begin services during the second marking period, and Kindergarten students are usually seen during the third marking period.) Feel free to continue reading below for additional information about our school district's EXCEL program.

EXCEL - The Enrichment of Exceptional Creative Engaged Learners

The EXCEL Program recognizes exceptionally able students, those who perform or show the potential to perform at high levels of ability. These programs offer meaningful opportunities and curriculum modified by content, process, products, and learning environment, which enable these students to achieve in accordance with their capabilities.

EXCEL MISSION:

We are committed to the belief that gifted students are individuals with potential who require guidance in discovering, developing, and realizing their potential as individuals and as members of society. It is the responsibility of the entire staff to meet the needs of gifted students by identifying their gifts and talents and developing those areas. This also requires a strong partnership between the Brick Township School District and the larger community.  Society needs integrated, higher functioning persons to play a demanding and innovative role in the continuation of the culture. The guiding principle of the EXCEL program is to empower our finest minds to become the future leaders and decision-makers in our ever-changing global world.

EXCEL INSTRUCTION:

The Brick District Elementary EXCEL program is based on Joseph Renzulli's Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM).  The levels of instruction include:

  • Small Identified Groups: for students identified as gifted and talented based on district criteria, using multiple measures
  • Specialty Enrichment Groups: for students having high levels of ability and interest in specific topics or units
