Welcome to Fourth Grade!

We are going to have a great year digging into the pages of many books and writing creative stories.

Check to the left of this page for useful links to enhance your child's learning in 4th grade.

**Here are some study tools and ways to enhance your child's spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension grades in Reading.

Spelling: Give your child a practice spelling test with ALL the words that is assigned to your child every week.  Grade the test with your child and allow him or her to write out words that are misspelled. Encourage him or her to locate the phonograms and small words within the word to help them spell the words.  Sign the practice test and have your child turn it in as extra credit. (This needs to be a different practice test than the one on the spelling menu.)  5 extra points will be added to your child's grade on the spelling test.

SPELLING MENU for Spelling HW

Students choose activities from menu to equal 10 points for a 4 day week and 12 pts for a 5 day week.

TEST will be on FRIDAY. New words will be given on Fridays for the upcoming week. This will allow students to practice words for a full week.

Vocabulary:  "Act it out" (voc. charades) and voc BINGO are interactive ways to study voc. each week. Review the flip book from the blue spiral.

Comprehension: If your child earned below a 75% on their Reading comprehension test, they have the option of earning back 10 points that would be added to their original grade. He or she must ask me to take home the test to review and redo the questions he or she missed before the following Wednesday. We go over the test on Wednesday (the next week) during class.

In order to practice necessary comprehension skills, have your child read the story again to you AND explain what answers they got right on the test.  Please encourage your child to show you in the story how they got their answer. We call it CUCC in class.  Your child must complete and follow the directions of the four steps to receive the extra credit (10 points) on grades below a 75%.

Extra Credit for Reading tests.  Students must use separate sheet of paper!

1.  Rewrite the questions you missed on the test (word for word).

2.  CUCC questions correctly. (Circle question word, underline important key words, count directions, and underline where you found the answer in the text with a different color than you used during the test)

3.  Explain in COMPLETE  sentences (at least 2-3 sentences) why you chose a different answer and explain the correct answer by using information and details from the story or text.

4.  Parents must sign this separate sheet of paper.  Please staple this sheet of paper to the original test to earn extra credit!!

Homework- It is assigned each night. There is always a math page and a spelling or reading comprehension sheet.  Your child is required to write down ALL HW assignments from the homework board on Monday before class starts for the whole week.  I will verify that your child has written the correct assignments. (Click on the "Homework and events" link on the left side of this webpage to review daily HW) Homework is checked every day.  I will make notes in your child's planner about improvements, missing assignments, etc...

ALL HOMEWORK IS DUE THE FOLLOWING DAY (SPELLING MENU POINTS ARE DUE ON FRIDAY).  IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS AN EXTRA NIGHT TO COMPLETE AN ASSIGNMENT MORE ACCURATELY AND THOROUGHLY, THEY HAVE UNTIL FRIDAY TO TURN IN ALL READING ASSIGNMENTS LISTED IN THEIR PLANNER.  Feel free to use your child's planner to communicate with me.
