Let the New Year (Finally) Begin!
8th Grade Social Studies (LA History)
Welcome Back! I hope you had a fun summer. This year, we will create a Social Studies journal. This will take place of a textbook. Notes, study guides, bell ringers, and other information will be kept in our INB-Interactive Note Book. It is very important that your child keeps track of this journal. If it gets lost, he/she will have to reproduce everything in it in order to be successful in my class. I have place in my classroom to keep it when it isn't being brought home for studying purposes or when work is needed to be completed. In LA History, we will be exploring how geographical features shaped LAs early influences; the colonization of LA and the motivations for countries to claim and control this territory; the evolution of LAs economy, society and politics as it evolved from a territory to Reconstruction; how LA responds to changing times from the turn of the twentieth century through the Civil Rights movement; what it means to be a citizen of LA and how LAs state government compares to and connects with our national government; and the natural resources and industries, as well as the problems plaguing those resources in what makes up LAs economy.
FYI: Your child has a grade posted weekly in my class. The grade will either be a quiz or a test. These papers are sent home with your child the next school day. Historical information and key concepts from resources will be used to interpret, analyze, and draw conclusions about many events essential in building our great state. Writing is a major part of learning such facts and we will use the RACE method when discussing orally and in print. Assignments will be posted on the homework calendar on my webpage. (Click on Homework under the main menu to access.) Please bring your INB, folder w/paper, a pen/pencil, colored pencils, scissors, and glue stick to class every day to complete the lessons. Make it a great year!
