Drama/Communications - Welcome Letter

Mrs. Carmen Delia Bryant

Dear Parent/Guardian and students,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Theatre! The following is an in depth explanation of my grading policy, classroom procedures, and student expectations. Enclosed you will find:

INFORMATION

  • Marking Period Calendar

  • Grade Level Syllabus

  • Daily Participation Rubric

  • Instructions to sign up for Remind notifications

GRADING SYSTEM

Daily Participation Grade (DPG) = (50%)

Quizzes/Tests = (25%)

Final Performance = (25%)

Total (100%)

(PG) - Participation:  Students are highly encouraged to participate in class. Students will be scored on a scale of 1-5 as indicated on the Participation Rubric. Participation grades can only be earned when the student is physically present in class. A zero will be given for any days the student is absent. Up to 3 absences will be excused for participation, however any written work, quizzes and/or tests must be completed when the student returns. Check the WHILE YOU WERE OUT folder for missed work.

(Q/T) - Quizzes/Tests:  Each class will cover 1-2 chapters of the text related to their final project. In general, mini quizzes will be given at the beginning of class which will cover topics taught during the previous lesson. These quizzes will then be used to review in preparation for the chapter test. All notes and graded quizzes/tests must be kept in your folder. Do not throw anything away until the end of the marking period.

(FP) - Final Performance: Each grade level is responsible for participating in an individual or group performance at the end of the marking period. Final performances will be assessed using a rubric designed specifically for the assignment. The grade level final performances are as follows:

8th grade – Write/Perform an Original Scene/Monologue

7th grade – Monologue Performance

6th grade – Speech/Story Dramatization

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Proper classroom conduct can be summed up with the following words:

Respect ~ Responsibility ~ Right Choices ~ Effort

By now you should be familiar with the four tenants we follow at BRMS, but there are times when a little reminder is needed. When rules are broken regarding any of the above classroom procedures or student expectations, the following actions will be taken:

1st Offense - Friendly Reminder

2nd Offense - Student-Teacher Conference (before, during or after class)

3rd Offense - Contact Parent/Guardian (phone, email, Remind notification)

4th Offense - Discipline Referral

PARENT EXPECTATIONS

Today’s technology makes it very easy to stay in touch with parents. As a parent myself, I find it necessary to use various methods to connect with my children’s teachers, as our busy schedules don’t always allow time for one-on-one communication. If you have a concern, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I will be sure to respond to your message within 24 hours.

I also use Remind to help students and parents stay connected. Remind is a service that allows me to send students and parents messages to remind them of upcoming tests, projects and special events taking place in class. You can choose to receive these messages via email, text message or push notifications when using the Remind app. Please indicate if you’d like me to add you and/or your child to my Remind list. See the enclosed flyer for more information or if you’d like to download the app, visit www.remind.com

*5 extra credit points to those whose parents sign up for Remind notifications.

BREAK A LEG!

Students should keep this letter in their class folder for future reference. I look forward to a fun and inspiring marking period with you. I wish you nothing but success in this class! If I can be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.
