First Grade:

Living the ABC's

Program Philosophy & Objectives:

“Living the ABC’s” is a holistic-minded physical education program that focuses on lifelong skills for the first grade child. This student-centered, multidisciplinary, year-long unit provides many opportunities for children to practice locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative movement skills while exploring the multiple facets that each letter of the alphabet provides.  There are no game rules to go over, no waiting turns, and most importantly, students are actively engaged throughout the class period.  This promotes high student achievement which, in turn, addresses all children’s needs because they are actively engaged. These movement skills are not taught as separate entities; rather they are integrated throughout the whole year. The cross-curricular approach of “Living the ABC’s” dovetails the whole-language approach that the first grade team utilizes in our language arts and literacy program.  The objective of the program is to physically educate the whole child while drawing upon many aspects of the curriculum.
