Welcome to Mrs. Lasure-Owens’ Formidable Fourth Grade Classroom!
I am thrilled to partner with you this school year to foster an engaging, supportive, and intellectually rich environment for your children. In our classroom, being "formidable" means building strength of mind, character, and community. We set high expectations, celebrate critical thinking, and cultivate empathy in everything we do.
A core component of our learning journey is a rich, inclusive curriculum that reflects the vibrant diversity of our world and history. Throughout the year, we weave key historical perspectives directly into our reading, social studies, and daily discussions:
-
The Amistad Commission: Students explore African American history, African cultures, the resilience of enslaved people, and the ongoing journey toward civil rights and equality.
-
Holocaust Education: Through age-appropriate literature and discussion, we focus on empathy, kindness, the dangers of prejudice, and the importance of being an active upstander rather than a bystander.
-
Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage: We highlight the rich cultures, historical contributions, and achievements of AAPI individuals who have shaped our nation.
-
Hispanic and Latino History: We celebrate Hispanic and Latino heritage, exploring diverse traditions, influential leaders, and significant contributions to science, art, and history.
-
Native American History: Students learn about the rich histories, sovereignty, cultures, and contemporary contributions of Indigenous peoples, honoring their past and present impact.
By learning history through these varied lenses, our fourth graders develop a complete, honest understanding of our shared past while building the compassion needed to shape a better future.
Thank you for sharing your incredible children with me. Please check CLASS DOJO regularly for updates, project highlights, and announcements. Together, we are going to make this a powerful and unforgettable year!
