The Power of Reading Aloud Children

from Kindergarten Through Grade 4:

1 book per week = 260 books

1 book per day = 1,825 boooks

Dear Parents,

Thank you for the support you are giving your children at home, and keep up the good work!

I cannot stress enough how important it is to read with your children EVERY DAY. Practice leads to improvement in sports and music, and the same is true for reading - the more you read, the better reader you become.

There are many simple strategies you can use to foster a love of reading.

It's wonderful for children to read "just right" books on their own, or read aloud to a sibling, parent, friend or pet at home. They love showing off their new reading skills.

It's also wonderful for children to hear books read aloud to them. Listening to and discussing books helps develop comprehension skills and builds vocabulary.

Look for topics that interest your child, and try a variety of genres - fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, biography, humor, even comic books. There's something for everyone at the library.

Finally - be a role model - the more your child sees you reading and writing, the more motivated he or she will be to do the same!

I encourage you to make reading an enjoyable part of your daily routine!

Happy reading,
