Language Arts Fifth Grade...Spring 2020

In fifth grade Basic Skills Language Arts, we will continue to work on many core skills, with a focus on reading for comprehension and fluency, and writing and responding in writing to text questions! We will also be  working on identifying figurative language within writing, including: metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, and alliteration.

We will continue to read fiction based, and expository  literature, with a focus on fluency techniques, including chunking words and  reading aloud. We place emphasis on comprehension of text, and attaining new vocabulary, with a focus on connotation, denotation, synonym, antonym, word forms, parts of speech, and etymology. Additionally, we practice comprehension and recall of important elements of fiction, including: characterization, setting, plot and theme.

Additionally, we will work on compare and contrast responses to literature, as well as inference skills, using maps and graphs to gain insight and information.

Continue to enjoy reading aloud at home at night!   Here are some questioning techniques that you can use with your child as you read aloud at  night...

What was your favorite part of the story/ book? Why?

Who was your favorite character? Why?

What was the most interesting thing you learned in the story/book?

Why do you think the author wrote the book?

If you could change one thing in the book, what would it be?

Happy Reading!
