Special Education and Study Skills/CMC:

Special Education is a team effort and as a teacher, I will help provide your student with instruction, positive reinforcement and assistance to help him/her work at being successful in school. I am part of a team responsible for your student’s Special Education services and file. Services for a student are decided as a team, of which includes parents and students, regular education teachers, special education teachers, outside services, and specific guidelines. Files include documentation and setting up meetings in a timely manner, services set in place during school, transitioning classes, assistance in the classroom and paperwork completed to pass state and federal guidelines.

I believe every student can be successful.  Student success requires the help of more than one person, so I work closely with content area teachers, for completion of assignments and fulfillment of course work expectations.  Additionally, students may receive quality assistance with our para-educator support, if so designated, in or out of the classroom. Our Study Skills/CMC room is especially equipped and located so your student may have a quiet work area, close monitoring and assistance, use of a visual manipulative to help with understanding, room to roam, firm behavior guidelines and lots of positive reinforcement.

As your student’s teacher, I welcome all questions, comments and suggestions. Because Special Education is highly confidential, I will not discuss your student outside the school setting and meetings will need to be scheduled as a team event, to include the student if so desired. Feel free to e-mail or call me at the above designated days and times. I look forward to visiting with you and discussing any/all specific needs your student may require.

Content Area Subjects:

Rapides Parish has implemented the Common Core State Standards. Guidelines for use of Alternative Standards have been set forth by the Louisiana Department of Education for students who qualify for an Alternative Assessment. Students requiring use of Alternative Standards will complete work within the current draft guidelines LDOE has supplied. Mainstream students complete the CCSS within the classroom, but with assignment modifications and aids in place as designated by their IEP team.

Grades:

The only areas I give grades in are for students assigned to Study Skills in their schedules. These areas include all class subjects, along with the best study practices for successfully completing each course. Grades will be obtained through a student’s completion of his/her planner, the daily bellringer, and the student’s behavior in class.

Homework:

There will not be homework assigned through Study Skills. Students assigned to Study Skills will be given some class time to work on homework assigned through other classes.

I look forward to a great school with your student and you!!
