Mr. Michael Kyles, Jr.

Hammond High Magnet School

Room 231 (A Day) & Room 206 (B Day)

Civics/PDP ATTL

 NECESSARY MATERIALS

All students are expected to come to class everyday with necessary materials. Necessary materials include: blue or black ink pen, 1” Binder, loose-leaf paper, one pack of 5 tab dividers, and color pencils or markers.  In the event other materials are needed the student will be notified or it will be provided by teacher.

ENTRANCE INTO THE CLASSROOM

As you are invited into the classroom, you are to go straight to your assigned seat. Place all items except for materials for this class under your desk (book sacks, purses, etc.) and begin working on Bell Work.  Bell Work will always be projected on the front screen as you enter the classroom.  Bell Work time is not a time to socialize, complete homework, or ask me questions. I should be able to take care of attendance and other beginning class business while you are working on Bell Work.  If you should finish your Bell Work before I am ready, you are to remain seated and wait for lesson to begin.

TARDIES

Arrival to class on time is important. You are considered tardy if they are not inside of the classroom before the bell stops ringing. If you are tardy you will sign the tardy binder. Consequences for being tardy will follow the HHMS discipline policy.

RESTROOM

You are to use the restroom prior to school, in P.E., or during lunch. You will be issued two bathroom passes per six weeks. Once you have used your passes you will not be given permission to leave the room. Even though a student may have bathroom passes it is still up to me to grant the student permission to leave. Students with medical conditions should submit a doctor’s note to me and the front office.  Bathroom use after a student has used their allotted passes for the semester will result in the student serving an after school detention (Missed Instructional Time). Failure to comply will result in further discipline actions according to the HHMS discipline policy.

FOOD AND DRINKS

Food is not allowed in the classroom. Rewards are the only exception and they will be provided by me. Students are allowed to have water only.

DISCARDING OF TRASH

Trash should be thrown away only while entering the classroom or during dismissal to the next class.  If you have trash during class time, you are to place it on the corner of your desk.  It will either be thrown away for you or you will be given permission to throw it away. Trash is not to be left behind under ANY circumstances. You are responsible for checking your area before leaving the room.

EARLY FINISHERS

If you should complete your assignment early, double check the answers to your work. There will be an Early Finishers Task for those who finish early located in the back of the classroom. At no point in time should you be sleeping or sitting with nothing to do. Early Finisher Tasks can be completed and turned in for bonus points. It must be turned in by the end of the current 6 weeks (max 15 points/PDP max 10 points) .

PERSONAL BELONGINGS

You are responsible for all of your own personal belongings. When you leave to go to another class, you are to take all of your belongings with you. Do not leave anything behind. Any items left in the class will be placed in the lost and found at the end of every week the lost and found will be cleaned out.

QUIETING THE CLASS

There will be times during class that I will need to get your attention. This will be done by me saying “Let Me Have Your Attention”. At that time, everyone should be quiet and have their eyes on me.

VISITORS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

When a visitor enters the room, you are expected to continue working on the task at hand.  If the visitor enters during a lesson, you will be given directions on what needs to be done. When announcements are being made, you are expected to stop whatever it is that you are doing and listen quietly as announcements are made-they may pertain to you.

ASKING/ANSWERING QUESTIONS

You are asked to participate in class and to ask questions, however, you are to raise your hand and wait to be recognized. You are to listen to the questions that other students ask so as to avoid the same question being asked multiple times. When another student has been called on to ask or answer a question, you are not to make comments or disrespect that student in any way.

COMPLETING CLASS/HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS

You are expected to work on all class assignments quietly and in a timely manner unless given instructions otherwise. All written assignments that are turned in should be done in blue or black ink. There should be no talking while class assignments are to be completed, unless you are working in groups. Any unfinished class assignment becomes homework. All homework will be posted in the front of the classroom and on Oncourse. It is your responsibility to copy your homework assignments in your planner.

AFTER COMPLETING A TEST OR QUIZ

After completing a test or quiz, you are to place papers in the appropriate tray. (Each class has a separate tray.) Instructions on what to do when you have completed your test or quiz will be posted on the screen in the front of the classroom.

TURNING IN ASSIGNMENTS

Each paper being turned in should have the appropriate heading. (Refer to poster hanging in the classroom for clarification if necessary.) All work should be turned in neatly. If I can’t read it then I can’t grade it. Any work that can’t be read or not headed correctly will be given the grade of zero.

MAKE-UP WORK

Students have 3 days upon returning to school to make up missed work, including tests.  You are to check the makeup folder for assignments you may have missed.  It is your responsibility to ask classmates for missed notes to be copied or missed bell ringers. Students who are suspended are afforded the opportunity to make up work to receive a maximum amount of 60%. Students who choose not to meet the 3 day deadline for makeup receive a zero in the grade book for no credit earned. All tests and quizzes will be made up after school on either Wednesday or Thursday in the library.

CHEATING

A grade of “F” with zero points will be earned for anyone involved in cheating, copying, plagiarism, being in possession of materials other than test materials (to include cell phones). A grade of “F” with zero points will be earned for anyone choosing to talk during a testing period.

GRADING

The grading scale for HHMS is posted in the room.  It will be strictly followed.  TPSS uses cumulative grading each semester.  HHMS has a 7 point scale for all regular subjects and a 10 point sclae for honors, AP, and IB courses.

CELL PHONES

The parish policy will be strictly enforced…for example, any cell phone or any other electronic device that goes off in class, is caught in use, or seen will be collected and turned in to the main office, resulting in following the Parish steps which can include fines.

DISMISSAL FROM CLASS

The bell does not dismiss you, I do. Check around your seat for your belongings and/or any trash.
