COURSE SYLLABUS FOR

Algebra III (Maupin)

2017-18

  1. Course Title: Algebra III

2. Course Description: This course requires the use of graphing technology to enhance  instruction in functions, polynomial equations and inequalities, rational equations and inequalities, radicals and the complex number system, quadratic and higher order polynomial functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and conic sections, trigonometric functions, arithmetic and geometric series. It will be taught in the order of the Comprehensive Curriculum for the state of Louisiana.

3. Course Prerequisites: Successful completion of Algebra I and Geometry is required and successful completion of Algebra II is suggested.

4. Course Dates: Complete school year

7. Instructor: Mr. Jason Maupin

8. Required Text and Other Learning Resources: Merrill, Advanced Mathematical Concepts (provided); Texas Instrument 83 or 84 graphing calculator (provided in class only – purchase one if possible); paper in a 3 ring binder; 1-two pocket folder(3 prong) , blue or black ink pen, pencils, graph paper.

a. Solving Linear Equations (review)

b. Chapter 1 (3 weeks)

Test on functions, domain range, interval notation, line graphing, domain restrictions

Test on Composite functions and inverse functions

Test on Graphing special linear equations and review of slope and writing linear equations

Test on Parallel and Perpendicular lines

c. Chapter 2 (3 weeks)

Test on solving systems of equations and graphing systems of equations

Test on Matrices, Determinants and Multiplicative Inverses of Matrices

Test on Solving Systems of Inequalities

e. Chapter 3 ( 3 weeks)

Test on graphing polynomial functions and symetry

Test on graphing radical and Inverse functions and relations

Test on graphing rational functions with asymptotes and solving rational expression stated

Problems (including variation problems)

Test on Tangent to a curve, graphs and critical points of Polynomial functions, and continuity and end behavior.

f. Chapter 4 (3 weeks)

Test on Graphing Quadratic Functions; Quadratic Equations and Inequalities

The Remainder and Factor Theorem.

Test on locating zeros and critical points

Test on Radical equations and inequalities

g. Chapter 5 (6 weeks)

Test on angles and their measures; central angles and arcs

Test on circular functions; trigonometric functions

Test on Law of Sines and Law of Cosines; Area of a triangle

j. Chapter 10 (4 weeks)

Test on Circles, Parabolas, Ellipse and Hyperbola.

Test on Conic Sections and Transformations

k. Chapter 11 (3 weeks)

Test on rational exponents, and exponential functions.

Test on Logarithmic functions, common logarithms.

Test on Exponential and Logarithmic equations and Natural Logarithm.

l. Chapter 12 (3weeks)

Test on Arithmetic Sequences and Series.

Test on Geometric Sequences and Series.

Sigma Notation and the Binomial Theorem; Special Sequence and Series.

10. Grading Policy and Rubric:

All marking or grading is to be uniform by numerical grades in the grade book. The averages of these numerical grades shall be converted to letter grades for each grading period. A minimum of 7 major grades shall be recorded each grading period. Homework/daily grades may be taken at random times. The following scale is to be used to determine nine weeks grades in all classes.

A (93-100); B (85-92); C (75-84); D (67-74); F (66 and below)

CALCULATING FINAL GRADES: The final exam will count as 1/5 of the final grade.

FINAL EXAMS ARE MANDATORY.

11. Make up policy: Grades that are not made up (even those due to absences) will receive a zero. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO ASK WHAT WORK WAS MISSED THAT NEEDS TO BE MADE UP WHEN THE STUDENT HAS BEEN ABSENT.

A student that has been absent has fiveschool days to make up the missed assignments and/or tests.Assignments may be turned in late due to absence on the day the work was assigned or the day the work was due. Grades can be made up for excused absences only.

Absences will not exceed 10 school days to receive credit.

Excused absences are school activity, doctor’s note for illness, court appearance, and funeral of a close relative. Make-up tests will be made up in the Make-up room or Appointment ONLY!! (NOT IN CLASS!!)

Please note that if you have received the review for the test, you will be expected to be prepared to take the test on the day you return.

12. Test Corrections: Must be complete before the next test. Test corrections can be completed during CORE time , before or after school ( with arrangements).   

13. KIR- If you are given a KIR you MUST complete the KIR the day it is given.

14. Course Policies:

CLASSROOM RULES & EXPECTATIONS -

  1. Each student will have his notebook, textbook, pencil, and assignment due when he enters the room.
  2.  Students must remain in the classroom, except for emergencies. The teacher will identify emergencies.
  3.  Each student is expected to be courteous to the teacher and to his classmates. Each student must raise his hand and be recognized before he speaks. Each student must remain seated in his assigned seat unless he is directed by the teacher to move.
  4.  Each student must write his name, the date, the period, the course name, and the lesson or page numbers on all assignments and tests. Papers without this information may receive zero credit.
  5.  Students must maintain a record of all grades, the date, the item graded, and possible points.
  6.  Students will not be allowed to engage in behaviors that prevent other students from learning.
  7.  Any dishonesty during testing will result in zero credit for the student who gives aid and the student who receives aid. Students will be immediately referred to the administration.
  8.  No student may chew gum, eat any food, comb hair, apply make-up, or put his head on the desk.
  9.  When the bell rings, students must remain seated until they are dismissed.
  10.    Students who are absent (with an excuse) must make up all work missed within three days after returning to school. It is the student’s responsibility to ask the teacher for missed assignments and/or tests. Make-up tests will be scheduled at the discretion of the teacher. If you are absent the day before a test, you will still be required to take it if you were given the review and you were present when the test was assigned.
  11.     Do not adjust the thermostat.
  12.  Do not write any messages or words on your calculator unless teacher directs.
  13.  Do not put your feet on the wire baskets under the desks.
  14.  Obey all rules, regulations, and policies of the Rapides Parish School Board and PHS.

Every tardy or dress code violation receives a KIR and is tracked.

Serious offenses will be immediately referred to the administration.

Other minor violations:

1st Offense: Warning on tracking form.

2nd Offense: Call parent, give additional written assignment and form to be signed by student and parent. (Failure to complete either means referral to Academic Dean.)

3rd Offense: Referred to Academic Dean.

4th Offense: Referred to Assistant Principal.
