Syllabus - CP Music Theory

Course Objectives:

  • Introduce the students to the basic components of music theory.
  • Introduce the students to basic music symbols, vocabulary and nomenclature.
  • Apply a working knowledge of music theory in the area of instrumental music if the student plays an instrument, sight singing, conducting, ear training and basic music composition.

 

Requirements: 

  • No prior musical experience is necessary.  Having a background in instrumental or vocal music is however, very helpful.
  • Students will need a notebook for class.
  • Students will need a music manuscript as well. This can be purchased at a store that sells music instruments such as Sam Ash, Guitar Center and Coles Music.

Units of Study:

  1. Basic Music Components: Melody, Pitch, Interval, Beat, Rhythm, Meter.
  2. Melodic format – Treble, Bass, Alto and Tenor Clefs.
  3. Rhythm – Whole, Half, Quarter, Eighth, Sixteenth notes and rests.
  4. Meter, Simple/compound, Time signatures.
  5. Intervals, Major, minor, augmented and diminished.
  6. Major scale and Key Signatures.
  7. Minor Scales (Natural, Melodic and Harmonic) and key signatures.
  8. Blues Scale, Pentatonic Scale.
  9. Triads, Major and Minor.
  10. Chords within a Major Key signature including Tonic, Dominant and Subdominant chords.
  11. Chord Progressions including I-V-I, I-IV-V-I, I-ii-vi-V-I
  12. 12 Bar Blues Progression
  13. Basic Cadences: Perfect Authentic, Plagal, Imperfect, and Interrupted/Deceptive.
  14. Basic music composition
  15. Ear Training
  16. Sight Singing
  17. Basic music conducting
