Syllabus - CP Music Theory

Course Objectives:
- Introduce the students to the basic components of music theory.
- Introduce the students to basic music symbols, vocabulary and nomenclature.
- Apply a working knowledge of music theory in the area of instrumental music if the student plays an instrument, sight singing, conducting, ear training and basic music composition.
Requirements:
- No prior musical experience is necessary. Having a background in instrumental or vocal music is however, very helpful.
- Students will need a notebook for class.
- Students will need a music manuscript as well. This can be purchased at a store that sells music instruments such as Sam Ash, Guitar Center and Coles Music.

Units of Study:
- Basic Music Components: Melody, Pitch, Interval, Beat, Rhythm, Meter.
- Melodic format – Treble, Bass, Alto and Tenor Clefs.
- Rhythm – Whole, Half, Quarter, Eighth, Sixteenth notes and rests.
- Meter, Simple/compound, Time signatures.
- Intervals, Major, minor, augmented and diminished.
- Major scale and Key Signatures.
- Minor Scales (Natural, Melodic and Harmonic) and key signatures.
- Blues Scale, Pentatonic Scale.
- Triads, Major and Minor.
- Chords within a Major Key signature including Tonic, Dominant and Subdominant chords.
- Chord Progressions including I-V-I, I-IV-V-I, I-ii-vi-V-I
- 12 Bar Blues Progression
- Basic Cadences: Perfect Authentic, Plagal, Imperfect, and Interrupted/Deceptive.
- Basic music composition
- Ear Training
- Sight Singing
- Basic music conducting
