        WELCOME TO CYCLE 6!

QUOTE TO THINK ABOUT BY HELEN KELLER:

THE HIGHEST RESULT OF EDUCATION IS TOLERANCE.

THERE IS NO FIFTH ACTIVITY, ONLY ACTIVITIES 1-4! However, it's

not too late to send me missing work!!

Anyone who would like to send me an original poem, please feel free to do so.

I would love to read it!!!

                            SCROLL DOWN FOR

            ACTIVITIES 1-4

                      THE FIRST ACTIVITY......

I hope you and your families are doing well!!!

Send me your work via email. DUE BY FRIDAY, May 8 or SOONER. Only

complete the first activity this week.

MOST IMPORTANT: Please include your period when you submit your activity.

If you have a question, just send me an email. Thank you!!! And have fun!!!

FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING STEPS to get the job done and have some fun!

Step 1: Google the story "The Blind Man and the Hunter."

Step 2: Read and enjoy this tale of tolerance.

Step 3: Write a 55 word poem, otherwisw known as a Double Nickel Poem.

Step 4: Use the following topic as a basis for your poem: What is the best piece of advice you

             have ever received?

Step 5: Follow the same format as the model below to write your Doule Nickel Poem. Your poem

must have 10 lines and be 55 words. The first line has one word, the second line has

two words, the third line has three words, the fourth line has four words and so forth and

             so one.

Step 6: Consider (always!) using similes, metaphors, and alliteration in your poem. However,

do not overdue it. Line 9 contains an alliteration in my poem.

                   THE Third Activity

Send me your work via email. Due Friday, May 22 or SOONER.

PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR CLASS PERIOD.

1. Start by reading the definition of a nonet (no - net).

2. A nonet is a nine line poem. The first line contains nine syllables, the next line has

eight syllables, the next line after that has seven syllables. This continues until the last line

(ninth line of poem) which has one syllable. I would strongly discourage trying to make your

nonet rhyme.

3. If you would like to count words instead of

syllables, that's perfectly okay with me.

4. Before writing the nonet, select one kind of prejudice from the list below and find out

what it means. Once you have made your selection, you will write your nonet based on that kind of

prejudice. Be sure to choose one that you have strong feelings about. IMPORTANT: YOUR NONET

CAN BE BASED ON A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE DEALING WITH THIS TYPE OF PREJUDICE OR ONE

THAT YOU MAKE UP.

       AGE PREJUDICE

       ECONOMIC PREJUDICE

       GENDER PREJUDICE

       MENTAL PREJUDICE

       NATIONAL PREJUDICE

       PHYSICAL PREJUDICE

       POLITICAL PREJUDICE

       RACIAL PREJUDICE

       RELIGIOUS PREJUDICE

       SOCIAL PREJUDICE

4. EXAMPLE OF A NONET WRITTEN BY YOURS TRULY. I COUNTED SYLLABLES, NOT WORDS.

          Time Tested

          by Mr. Shapiro

So I've taught forty-four years. So                              (9 syllables)

What! I'm not washed up yet. The thrill                      (8 syllables)

Still thrives like a happy vine                                      (7 syllables)

Blooming on a trellis.                                                   (6 syllables)

If my sixty-five                                                              (5 syllables)

Years have taught me                                                  (4 syllables)

Something: AGE                                                          (3 syllables)

DOES NOT                                                                    (2 syllables)

COUNT                                                                          (1 syllable)

The Fourth Activity

Due Wednesday, June 3

or sooner.

Email me your work and please include your class period.

Step 1: Google the poem "Becoming Joey" by Paul C. Gorski

Step 2: Read and enjoy the poem.

Step 3: Answer the following question in 3 to 5 sentences - What is your

favorite thing about the poem? Why?

Step 4: Write a free verse poem between 15 and 20 lines about a

significant moment in your life. For Jose in the poem, it was

transforming into Joey to fit in at school.

Step 5: Features of Free Verse.

Note: "Becoming Joey" is a free verse poem!

             a) does not have any set rules

             b) does not follow a proper rhyme scheme

             c) uses devices such as similes, metaphores, alliteration,

                 repitition and personification.

             d) vary the number of words per line

             e) organize the lines and stanzas in a way that works best

                 for the poem

             f) be creative, take risks and "reach for the sky"
