We will take our math test on topic 13: Extending Fraction Concepts  on Tuesday, April 4th. 

 

 

Week of February 13, 2016

 

Topic 11: Fraction Equivalence and Ordering

Students will:

-learn how to factor whole numbers

-learn to identify prime and composite numbers

-find the multiples of a number

-use models and computation to show equivalent fractions

-use a number line to identify and write equivalent fractions

-use benchmark fractions to compare fractions with unlike denominators

-use common denominators and equivalent fractions to order fractions with unlike denominators

-write to explain whether an answer is correct or not

 

 

 

Week of January 23, 2017 and January 30, 2017

 

Topic 10: developing fluency dividing with 1-digit divisors

-Students will see that division is repeated subtraction

-Use place value to understand the algorithm of long division

-use the standard algorithm to divide a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number

-use the standard algorithm to divide a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number

-use the standard algorithm to divide 3-digit numbers by  1-digit numbers and properly decide wherer to begin dividing

-estimate and find quotients for a 4-digit dividend and a 1-digit divisor

-identify the hidden question in a multistep problem. Use the answer to the hidden question to solve the original problem

 

 

Week of January 9, 2017

We'll finish topic 8 and take our test on Tuesday.  We begin division on Wednesday.

 

Week of January 3, 2017

 

Topic 8: Developing Fluency- Multiplying by 2-digit numbers

 

-use grids and patterns to multiply 2-digit numbers and multiples of 10

-use partial products to multiply 2-digit numbrs by 2-digit numbers and find the products

-multiply a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number using the standard algorithm

-problem solving: solve two question problems

Week of December 5, 2016

 

Test on topic 6 on Tuesday

Topic 7: Multiplying by 2-digit numbers

-use arrays to multiply 2-digit numbers by multiples of 10

-discover and use patterns to multiply by multiples of 10

-use rounding to estimate solutions to multiplication problems involving two 2-digit numbers

-use compatible numbers and rounding to estimate solutions to multiplication problems involving two 2-digit numbers

-identify and answer hidden questions to solve multi-step problems

 

 

 

Week of November 28, 2016

-Record multiplication using an expanded algorithm

-Multiply 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers using the expanded and standard algorithm

-Multiply 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. Check for reasonableness

-Multiply 3 and 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers using the standard algorithm and check for reasonableness

-Identify the extra or missing information in word problems

Topic 6 Test will be on Monday, December 5th

 

Week of November 7th and 14th: Topic 5

Number Sense: Multiplying by 1-digit Numbers

-We'll use arrays to multiply by 10 and 100

-We'll use basic multiplication facts and number patterns to multiply by multiples of 10 and 100

-We'll break apart numbers and use arrays to multiply 2-digit by 1 digit numbers

-We'll use compensation to multiply numbers mentally

-We'll use rounding to estimate solutions to multiplication problems

-The problem solving skill in this unit: check for reasonableness.  Students will make sure their calculations answer the question that was asked.  They'll need to correctly label their answers. Estimation will also be used to check for reasonableness. 

It looks like our chapter 5 math test will be on November 18th

 

 

 

Week of October 24 and 31: Topic 4

Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers

 

-We'll be rounding whole numbers to estimate sums and differences

-We'll add numbers to hundreds and thousands with and without regrouping

-We'll subtract numbers to the thousands with and without regrouping

-We'll subtract numbers with zeros to thousands

-We'll draw a diagram and write an equation to solve problems. 

Our test will either be Thursday 11/3 or Friday 11/4.  

 

 

Week of October 17, 2016: we will continue working on chapter 3.  Our test on this chapter will take place on Thursday, October 20th. 

Week of October 10, 2016

Chapter 3: Place Value

-We will read and write numbers in the hundred thousands

-learn how the digits in a multi-digit whole number relate to each other

     by their place value

-compare whole numbers through hundred thousands

-use knowledge of place value to compare and order whole numbers

-round whole numbers to different place values

-use the problem solving strategy: make an organized list to find and

     record all the possible outcomes of a situation

We will take our test on chapter 2 on Friday, October 7th.

Week of September 26th and October 4th-chapter 2:

Generate and analyze patterns

-identify and continue repeating patterns

-identify the rule in numerical sequences, and continue patterns

-Find the rule to complete a table

-write rules to find the the missing quantities

Problem solving strategy: act it out or use reasoning to solve a problem.

 

Math test on chapter 1: Monday, 9/26

Topic 1: Multiplication and Division: meanings and facts-

-using an array to write a repeated addition sentence and a multiplication sentence.

-Use break apart (distributive property) to solve multiplication problems,

-use fact families and related multiplication facts to solve division problems
