Welcome to Visual ART at Hillside Innovation Academy.

Visual Art is essential to humanity, education, and a pathway to deeper understanding of self and the world. Every culture has an art-making practice and we will explore many of these throughout our time together at HIA. In addition to exploring artists from the past and present, we will also explore a wide range of techniques including collage, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, fibers, and ceramics. Our artworks typically have a theme, but are open to each artist to make choices for their work! Maintaining a visual journal is a huge part of our classroom practice which will include sketches and notes, working towards cohesive and dynamic pages usinga range of techniques. I look forward to encouraging all of you on your artistic journey!

A little bit about me, I am a practicing artist in my community of Jersey City, where I live with my two cats Bruce and Betty Boop, bird Loula, and my partner Eric. I love going to local galleries where I sometimes show my work and travel often to art museums throughout the tri-state area. I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and received very little art education until High School. I attended Maryland Institute College of Art, where I completed a dual degree program for undergrad Fine Arts and graduate for Art education. I believe that creative thinking is essential to life and that art builds confidence, fine and gross motor skills, and community. Art can be found in every culture and I encourage students to  express theirs in their work.
