My name is Katarzyna Rudnik and this is my 9th year teaching. I graduated in 2016 with a Masters in Special Education (P-3), from New Jersey City University. I am so happy to be welcomed into the school and the community and look forward to teaching your children.

Dressing:   Encourage your child to assist in choosing clothes to wear and dressing himself. Provide as little help as possible.   

 

Brushing Teeth:   Brush teeth with your child- first by asking him to copy what you do and then providing hand-over-hand assistance as needed.

Suggestions:  As you read, direct your child’s attention to the different pictures. Ask your child to point to or name objects/animals pictured. Ask simple “who” questions related to the story.

Fine Motor Activity

Work on using a pincer grasp (isolating index finger and thumb) when picking up a crayon. Provide a coloring page and encourage your child to color inside the shape.

Suggestion:   Breaking crayons in half helps to encourage this skill.

Free Choice Activity

Suggestions:  Play a game, play with a preferred toy, free color, sing a song, etc. 

11:30 A.M. 

Activity 1

Set up situations for your child to ask for help. For example, give him a snack he cannot open, a toy he cannot use independently, etc. (Wind-up toys work great for this!) Either model “help” for your child to request for assistance or the name of the object (ex: “car!”).

Lunch

Suggestions:  Allow your child to feed himself as independently as possible. Provide hand-over-hand assistance with utensils if needed and gradually lesson over time. If appropriate, have your child help prepare his meal.

Activity 2

Using an empty egg carton, practice 1:1 correspondence. Supply your child with 12 small items to place into the carton. Model that one should go into each section of the carton. Use hand-over-hand assistance as needed. If appropriate, practice counting the items afterward using hand-over-hand.

Suggestions:  Allow your child to feed himself as independently as possible.

Supply a sheet of paper and a crayon. Say “do this” and then model 2 seconds of scribbling. Then hand the crayon to your child for him to do the same. Provide hand-over-hand assistance if needed. Encourage your child to keep crayon to paper for gradually increased periods of time.

Free Choice Activity

Suggestions:  Play a game, play with a preferred toy, free color, sing a song, etc.

Activity 1

Practice some simple 1-step directions such as “give me___”, “get shoes”, “sit down”, etc. Help your child carry out the directions if he does not respond. Repeat the directions throughout.

Work on body part identification with your child. Start with simple ones such as head, eyes, nose, feet and gradually try more difficult ones (ears, chin, shoulders, etc.). Ask your child to point to body parts on his face and yours! Provide hand-over-hand assistance as needed.

Practice gross motor imitation with your child. You can make it a game by calling it “Mommy says” (etc.) Practice movements such as “arms up”, “touch head”, “stomp feet” and “jump.” Help your child complete the movements if needed.

Start a dialogue and prompt your child to participate whether by using his own jargon or functional language. Try having your child imitate simple animal sounds that you make.

Activity 1

Search your home for some simple “go together” items (sock/shoe, bowl/spoon, paper/pencil, etc.) Provide two items that do not belong together and hand your child one that goes with one of those supplied items. Ask your child to match the item with the one it belongs with.

Cut some colored paper into basic shapes such as circles and squares. On a separate, larger sheet of paper, make thick outlines of corresponding shapes using a dark marker. Have your child match the shapes by placing the colored shapes into the corresponding outlined shapes. Practice naming the shapes as you go along.

Set multicolored paper on a table and discuss the different colors with your child. Encourage your child to go throughout their home and gather items of all the different presented colors. Have your child place those items on the corresponding colored paper.
